Nicoletta Cabassi

COREOGRAPHER
Nicoletta Cabassi is born in Parma (Italy) and is a choreographer/dancer/teacher/performer with a dance education both classical and contemporary. After graduating at the Art High School she moves to abroad to perfect the training, at first in France (Toulouse and Cannes) and then in Vienna. During the years of apprenticeship she meets many teachers and choreographers as (among others): Ed Wubbe (of which she takes part in “Arrabbs”), Birgit Cullberg, Jean-Yves Ginoux (of which she dances in “Spirales des pleurs”), Virgilio Sieni, Wim Vandekeybus, Frédéric Flamand (at University IUAV in Venice), Abbondanza/Bertoni, Roberto Castello, Angelin Preljocaj; she takes also daily classes with the Ballet Frankfurt, etc. Alongside the dance experiences she studies also theatre (with Pippo Delbono, Cesare Ronconi/Teatro Valdoca, Thierry Salmon etc. In 1994 she spends a period, as intern, with the Compagnie Maguy Marin in Paris.
Such as dancer she worked in several opera theatres in Italy and in the world (Swiss, France, Belgium, China, Israel etc.) and with many companies: Compagnia XE, TeatroDanza Skené, ArtemisDanza, TocnaDanza, La Fura dels Baus the artist Tino Sehgal (in 3 different pieces). From 2004 to 2008 collaborates actively with the C.T.R., Centre for Theatrical Research in Venice, covering the roles of main teacher and choreographer. In 2008 sh’is invited to choreograph the live-shows in the frame of the world presentation of Lancia Delta’s Car at Court of Honour in the Royal Palace of Venaria (Turin). Since 2010 she works with the opera director Stefano Poda collaborating and performing in many of his productions (role of Put-in-pao in “Turandot” and Lady Capulet in “Roméo et Juliette”). From 2013 to 2015 has been assistant with the Tanz Company Gervasi in Vienna, creating “Solo, with guests”, “The with horn” and “What kind of animals is?…”).
As choreographer free-lance she worked with: Virginie Daenekyndt, Paolo Mangiola (co-creating ”11′ at the Royal Opera House in London), Simona Lisi, the brasilian visual and video artists Leandro Lisboa, Daniele Spanò/NU Factory, Martin Romeo, Teatro del Cerchio, OTTOelectro (co-creating “Self“), the dance companies Pour un soir (France) and Borderline Danza; in the year 2015 works in Plzen (Czech Republic), for the European Capital of Culture; in 2017 the Teatro Regio in Parma commissions her a project for the Festival Verdi Off and in same year creates “O(s)chéma” for the national project Bioma directed by Anticorpi; in the year 2019 creates “Orfeo and Euridice” of C. W. Gluck for the Teatro Verdi in Padua together with Bassano Opera Festival. In december 2020 premiered in streaming “In Divenire / In becoming” at Cafè Muller (Turin) for the theatrical season ‘SOLO in teatro’.
She has been invited as choreographer/teacher from: Accademia Nazionale Danza in Rome (winner of the public open call Resid’AND), ‘the professional course ROS (inside the Opus Ballet in Florence), the Professional Course of Deos (within Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa), Le Quartz in Brest (within the festival of ‘la Becqué’), Liceo Coreutico in Reggio Emilia, Liceo Coreutico in Grosseto within the festival Cassero in Danza, the advanced Course of Padova Danza (recognized by the Ministry), etc. As a volunteer he also carried out pedagogical activities with cancer patients and ex-patients.
Her works has been presented in Italy, France, Great Britain, Germany, USA, Belgium, Austria, Czech Republique, Spain, etc.
Prizes: In 2006 with “Sub Rosa – C.s.O. opera aperta” won the ‘Critic Award’ and the ‘Prize of young audience’ at festival Ermo Colle (Parma, IT); with “SOL”’ won the ‘Audience Award’ and the ‘Prize of the Organization’ at festival Voci dell’anima (IT, november 2010). Appears as dance-author in “Performativi – per uno sguardo scenico contemporaneo”, Gwinplayn edizioni, 2011 AN (Italy).
Despite the central fulcrum in her life the dance has been never enough for her: she was part of dark-underground musical groups and received a university humanistic education (in particular in Musicology / History of theater and entertainment). Loves to cross and work in different artistic environements and take risks accepting experimental and challenging projects.
